Washington 9th Grader, Anthony Zendejas

Anthony Zendejas, now a 9th grader at Klahowya Secondary School, last year did an individual performance entitled, The Rescue of the Doomed Ghost Soldiers of Bataan.  His performance recently gained the attention of Kinue Tokudome, author of the website, US-Japan Dialogue on POWs.  Ms. Tokudome has uploaded Anthony's script and performance; you can find it under the Essays tab on the website.

Hi Anthony: I downloaded the complete script of your play. It brought tears to my eyes. My Dad was a Death March Survivor and was rescued by Captain Prince and the Rangers. He published a short memoir and if you would like a copy I would be more than happy to send you one. As you know, all the vets says over and over again, "don't forget." That is why I put my Dad's info on the www.battleofbataan.com website. I was wondering if I could put this page on my Links page so that people can link in and see your fantastic play. Also, has anyone made a video tape of your performance? I think that that would be a great thing to do. I will leave it to you whether or not to charge for it (maybe at least postage and handling). My Dad wanted to sell his memoirs but he always kept copies available for people that wanted them and couldn't afford to pay. It was always "don't ever forget." I am so proud to see that you have done something so very, very special so that this debacle and tradgedy will never be forgotten. The old saying is that if we don't learn from the past we are doomed to repeat it. I would hate to see anyone have to go through what my Dad and his buddies went through. Also, please look at the video on my site. I was just completely bowled over when I saw this because there was my Dad coming down the gangplank from the USAT General Anderson when it brought the rescued POWs to San Francisco. On the slow motion part of the video he is on the extreme left. A lot of documentaries and other things use this particular video clip a whole lot. In fact, it is in the movie, "The Great Raid". You can imagine how I felt when here was my Dad on the big time movie screen. I also have a lot of other videos pertaining to the Death March and the POWs, etc. If you would like me to run you a copy I would be happy to. Again, I think what you have done is just absolutely fantastic and I do hope that you and your parents will consider putting it on either tape or a disc. If I, and my wife, were so very, very moved just reading the script I can just imagine what an in person tape or disc would do. If you want to use any part of my website for whatever reason please don't hesitate to ask and I will gladly give you written permission to use whatever you want.
